DC Man Brutally Beats Ex, Uses 5-Year-Old Son To Silence Her: DOJ

A jealous DC man brutally attacked the mother of his child, beating her unconscious in her own bathroom—then spent months trying to manipulate her into dropping the case, even using their 5-year-old son, officials said.

John Brown III, 32, was found guilty of assault with significant bodily injury, obstruction of justice, and contempt after a trial in DC Superior Court, prosecutors announced on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

It all began on July 4, 2023, during a game night at the victim’s Southeast DC apartment, where Brown was among the guests. But when the party ended, Brown was waiting in her bedroom—ready for a confrontation, authorities said.

Brown snapped after learning the woman had previously been in a relationship with his friend. He punched her in the face, strangled her, and chased her down as she tried to flee, prosecutors said. A friend of the victim tried to intervene, but Brown grabbed the woman by the ankle, dragged her back, and knocked her out cold in the bathroom, officials said.

Even after she regained consciousness, Brown continued beating her mercilessly until she and her friend managed to escape and call 911. The woman suffered severe injuries to her face, neck, and eyes and was rushed to a hospital, authorities said.

‘Drop The Case So Dada Can Come Home’

Despite a court-ordered stay-away order, Brown immediately launched a relentless campaign to pressure his victim into dropping the charges, prosecutors said.

Officials say he:

  • Offered her cash through CashApp to make the case disappear.
  • Had a family member repeatedly pressure her to “get the case thrown out.”
  • Used their 5-year-old son to emotionally manipulate her, telling the boy to say, “Drop the case so dada can come home.”

Brown’s attempts to coerce, manipulate, and harass his victim led to multiple convictions for obstruction of justice and contempt.

He faces significant prison time when he is sentenced on May 16.
